CITB Abrasive Wheels Theory Training

Overview
The Blueprint Genius Training course is designed to impart comprehensive knowledge about the hazards and risks linked with the use of abrasive wheels. Participants will gain a clear understanding of their responsibilities as per the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER). The training will focus on the safe mounting of abrasive wheels and discs on portable machinery, equipping attendees with the necessary skills to operate the equipment safely.

Duration:

3 hours - 4 hours (Half-day session - max 15 delegates)

 

Objective:

This course aims to equip delegates with comprehensive knowledge and understanding of:

 

- The use of abrasive wheels in portable grinders, angle grinders, and disc cutters

- Identification of hazards, associated risks, and control measures

- Marking and selection criteria for abrasive wheels

- Proper storage, handling, and transportation methods

- Inspection and testing procedures

- Understanding of components and their functions

- Assembling and mounting techniques

- Relevant legislation concerning abrasive wheels

- The cutting and grinding processes

 

Occupational Relevance:

This training is pertinent for:

 

- Operative and craft roles

- Supervisory positions

 

Prerequisites:

No specific prerequisites are required for this course.

 

Course Delivery: 

Training will be a combination of class room based and on-site assessment.

 

Pass requirements

- Delegates must pass an end-of-course knowledge test covering all learning outcomes, with a minimum of 10 multiple-choice questions.

- A minimum pass mark of 80% is required for successful completion.

 

Learning Outcomes:  

 

Upon completion of this course, delegates will be able to:

 

- Identify and describe hazards, risks, and control measures associated with abrasive wheels (HSE-HSG17, SR21, CIS54).

- Select appropriate abrasive wheels based on markings, material, and task requirements.

- Safely store, handle, and transport abrasive wheels.

- Conduct inspections and tests to identify damage and imbalance in abrasive wheels (HSE-HSG129).

- Recognise and describe the functions of abrasive wheel components such as flanges, blotters, bushes, and nuts.

- Assemble abrasive wheel units correctly to ensure they are balanced and safe for use.

- Identify and select suitable personal protective equipment (PPE) and respiratory protective equipment (RPE) as required.

- Explain the methods and techniques of cutting and grinding.

Grant: Tier 1 = £60 per person

If a candidate has been paid grant for a particular course in a lifetime, they will not be eligible for grant again for the same course, unless it has specific refresher standards published on the short duration course register.

If refresher course standards do exist for a particular course, then only one refresher is grant eligible in a lifetime for each candidate.
